Recently, the Department of Science and Technology of Zhejiang Province held a meeting in Zhoushan for acceptance inspection of the national science & technology support program titled “large-scale demonstration program of membrane seawater desalination system integration and municipal water supply. A panel of nine experts including Gao Congjie, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, attended the meeting. The members of the expert panel listened to the implementation report of the project team of Hangzhou Water Treatment Technology Development Center (HWTT), reviewed relevant data of inspection check and conducted on-site test on the 20,000t/d homemade seawater desalination system. They reached a consensus that the research tasks have been successfully completed, spoke highly of relevant results and agreed that the program passes the acceptance check.
The research program is one of the largest national scientific and technological program that HWTT undertook during the “12th Five-year Plan” period, aiming to make breakthroughs in large-scale seawater desalination projects, develop 50,000/d homemade reverse osmosis seawater desalination technologies that are suitable for municipal water supply, build a 50,000 t/day demonstration project for reverse osmosis seawater desalination and realize demonstration application of independently-developed key equipments in demonstration of large-scale seawater desalination work.
After making great efforts, the project team has finally developed technologies such as large-scale membrane seawater desalination integration and pretreatment, quality regulation of desalted water, membrane stack combination and arrangement, uniform water distribution and low-energy coupled system integration, pretreatment equipments such as dissolved air flotation and horizontal filter, etc., and built a reverse osmosis seawater desalination pilot project with a total scale of 65,000 tons/day, of which the localization rate of key parts and equipment of the 20,000 ton/day demonstration project at Liuheng reached 100%, realizing that the localization rate of the above seawater desalination projects and energy consumption reaches 2.1 kilowatts per hour, a globally leading level..
In the research program, core materials and key equipments have been basically localized, providing China’s seawater desalination equipment manufacturing and complete engineering technologies with active guidance, greatly reducing the investment and water-making costs of seawater desalination, laying a foundation for China to establish an integrated industrial demonstration base for seawater desalination integrating seawater desalination technical research, equipment manufacturing, engineering construction, material production and industrial service, and providing reference experience in innovations of membrane material, energy recovery, high-pressure pump and pressure vessel, etc.
To respond to China’s “Belt & Road” initiative, HWTT has brought the research results to the international market, exported seawater desalination technologies to more than 10 countries and regions, with an accumulative total scale of 200,000 tons/day.
