On Nov 25, the inaugural meeting of the ISO Plastic Technical Committee (ISO/TC61) Secretariat was held in Chengdu city, Sichuan Province. It is the first time that ISO/TC61 has set foot in China. The committee is also the first international standardization organization (ISO) in the country’s chemical industry, which is of great significance in helping China to be in the position to lay down international plastic standards. It will also upgrade the innovative capacity of China’s plastic industry as well as boost the creation of a standardization system for plastics and other relevant products, bringing new opportunities for industrial development during the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan”.
The previous Secretariat was located in U.S, where its tenure was due to expire this year, according to Zhang Lin, director of the International Department of China’s Standardization Administration. China’s rapid development of its plastic industry, received the recognition of ISO, and won the Secretariat over from the other two competitors Germany and Russia. The Standardization Administration approved the location of the Secretariat under the China Bluestar Chengguan Research Institute of Chemical Industry.
