On June 3, the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs issued the Notice on the Emergency Pesticide-related Control of Spodoptera frugiperda. According to the situation that Spodoptera frugiperda has invaded 18 provinces in China and currently no pesticide had been registered for the prevention and control of the pest, 25 kinds of pesticide products for emergency use were proposed. Syngenta and ADAMA under China National Agrochemical Corporation have their own products registered and have prepared their own highly efficient integrated plans for the prevention and control of the pest.

Syngenta’s integrated prevention and control plan mainly adopts the concept of prevention and control window. Different agents with different action mechanisms are used in different window periods. It is suggested that prevention and control should be started from an early stage. It is understood that Syngenta has already obtained 72 product registrations of Spodoptera frugiperda feeding on maize in 11 countries in America and 28 registrations in 14 countries in Africa. In order to respond to Spodoptera frugiperda and protect crops from this pest, Syngenta drew lessons from its rich experience in the prevention and control of Spodoptera frugiperda worldwide and began to verify the prevention and control formula when the Spodoptera frugiperda was first discovered in Yunnan at the beginning of the year. In China, it has mainly verified the prevention and control effects of three chlorantraniliprole (the effective ingredient recommended by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization) mixed products Fuqi, Fuge, Liangtai, and Meichu (lufenuron) on Spodoptera frugiperda, and submitted its registrations. Recently, it has organized an observation and learning activity on the prevention and control of Spodoptera frugiperda in Jinning District, Kunming City, Yunnan Province, to demonstrate the prevention and control effects of combinations of products such as Liangtai, Fuge and Meichu.

ADAMA acephate products including Longchuang (92% acephate soluble granule) and Ruixian (75% acephate soluble powder) have the characteristics of good absorbability, wide insecticidal spectrum, and safe use. Therefore, they are very suitable for emergency prevention and control of Spodoptera frugiperda, especially when pests have occurred. In addition, Ruimengde, a novaluron-based preparation product, is widely used in lepidopteran pest control worldwide and can kill eggs and young larvae efficiently and exterminate insect sources.

Spodoptera frugiperda, known as “moth,” a major cross-border migratory agricultural pest warned globally by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, invaded China for the first time this year, spreading rapidly and having extremely destructive power. As a pernicious pest widely occurring in the world, the prevention and control of Spodoptera frugiperda require the joint efforts of various countries, departments and crop protection industry, and comprehensive prevention and control through quarantine, monitoring, and biological and chemical prevention and control. Syngenta and ADAMA will work with the majority of growers to proactively promote their integrated prevention and control plans while doing a good job in the safe and reasonable use of pesticides.
