Recently, Li Keqiang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Premier of the State Council, visited Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province, including the construction site of the 40 million tons/year oil refining and petrochemical integration project on Yushan Island. The project is owned by Zhejiang Petrochemical, with Hangzhou Water Treatment as the EPC contractor for its seawater desalination system to ensure the water supply.
The project is located in the green petrochemical base in Zhoushan, with an investment totaling RMB173 billion. After completely put into operation, it's expected to be the country's biggest and the world's fifth biggest of its kind. There, a world-class massive, comprehensive and modern petrochemical base will emerge, which will optimize the distribution of the petrochemical industrial in the Yangtze River Delta, engage China deeply in the labor division of global petrochemical industry, promote the development of the Belt and Road Initiative, and effectively help transform and upgrade the Chinese petrochemical industry.
The project is thirsty for freshwater which is scarce on the island. Hence the seawater desalination project undertaken by Hangzhou Water Treatment is a key support for it, and after completion will provide a sufficient, reliable freshwater supply for Zhejiang Petrochemical's project. For this project, Hangzhou Water Treatment uses its 4m-diameter filter which is hard to transport and operate and has high demands on the construction site. Since the project kicked off, Hangzhou Water Treat has attached great importance to work in all fronts to make sure the construction work is advanced side by side in different fields and provide the best management and guidance for the desalination system within its capacity. Up to now, 22 horizontal filters, 7 sets of reverse osmosis equipment, 17 cartridge filters, and 5 bridge cranes have arrived at the site and are being installed, to be followed by water pumps, energy recovery equipment, and storage tanks. After completion, it will become the biggest desalination project in the Chinese petrochemical industry, with the daily capacity exceeding 100,000 tons.
During his visit, Premier Li made it clear that "The project must be green, safe and up to international standards. It must strictly comply with first-class environmental protection standards, ensure workplace safety, embody not only China speed but also China quality, and put safety above everything else." The construction workers were all encouraged and inspired. On-site project manager Jiang Zijian said, “We are so moved by the pep talk given by His Excellence. We will keep our mission in mind and work hard to make the project a great success.”
In the past 50-plus years, Hangzhou Water Treatment has accumulated rich experience in desalination demonstration projects with the capacity varying from 100 tons, 1,000 tons, 10,000 tons to 100,000 tons, and is capable of undertaking world-class water treatment projects for petrochemical purposes. It will always bear its mission in mind, committed to the development and integrate utilization of water resources, and relentlessly after sustainable development.
