This July, Elkem Chicoutimi Ferrosilicon Plant, affiliated with Elkem AS, Norway, will celebrate its 50th anniversary.

On July 1, 1967, the plant was founded on the basis of a consortium named “Les Silicium de Chicoutimi” consisting of four companies including Union Carbide Canada Ltd, Aluminium Canada (Alcan), Montreal engineering company (Monenco) and “La Corporation de Sécurité Royale ltée”. Elkem AS acquired the plant in 1984.

Since it was established in 1967, the plant has operated on a continuous basis, except for shut downs for replacement of major parts, such as the furnace shell or main high-tension equipment. The plant also had a two-month shutdown to control its inventory and maintain its market competitiveness in 2009 as a way of addressing the economic crisis.

All the employees of Elkem Chicoutimi Plant have spared no efforts to ensure the steady operation of the plant and will continue making greater contributions to the plant with a grand vision for the next 50 years.
